Elizabeth Banks to voice VR Short Film

Holylwood actress Elizabeth Banks (Hunger Games, W., Slither) is to star in an upcoming animated film, written and created entirely for virtual reality.

Banks will lend her voice to the animated short “Asteroids!”, produced by Baobab Studios, which follows the adventures of Cheez (Banks) and compatriot Mac as they navigate their spaceship through an asteroid field.

Baobab Studios, founded last year, is made up of talented animators from Pixar, Disney, and DreamWorks Animation, co-founded by former Zynga VP Maureen Fan and Eric Darnell, writer and director of the Madagascar animated movies. Earlier this year they announced funding of $25 million across several industry leaders such as 20th Century Fox.

In a statement regarding the investment, Mike Dunn, president of 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, said, “We are on the cusp of a storytelling revolution with this medium, and VR gives filmmakers the opportunity to develop immersive experiences and take audiences into the story like never before.”

Baobab first introduced the characters of Mac and Cheez in another animated VR story released earlier this year, “Invasion!”, a six minute short that pits the two bumbling space invaders against innocent, adorable bunnies.

“Asteroids!” will no doubt continue in the same vein, following the Laurel and Hardy adventures of Mac and Cheez in another superbly animated adventure.

A four minute preview of the 360-degree short is already available today for Samsung Gear VR and Google Daydream, and the full version will debut at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah next month.
